In a statement via X, Kipchoge said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of the Marathon World record holder and rising star Kelvin Kiptum.”“An athlete who had a whole life ahead of him to achieve incredible greatness. Kiptum won the London Marathon in April 2023 before setting the world record in Chicago in October. His sudden death comes barely a week after his world record was ratified by World Athletics. Kiptum is the reigning London and Chicago city marathon champion who bettered Kipchoge’s old marathon mark with a time of 2:00.35 in Chicago on October 8.
