National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan has said he is in the midst of a serious crisis as officials and employees continue their protests against reforms introduced by the interim government. Despite this, the platform leading the protests -- NBR Reform Unity Council -- has decided to boycott the meeting, saying they were not officially invited. Earlier in the week, the Reform Unity Council announced that if the chairman was not removed by Friday, they would launch a “complete shutdown” of all income tax, customs, and VAT offices starting Saturday. The unrest began in May after the government split the NBR into two separate wings, Revenue Management and Revenue Policy, through an ordinance. Facing mounting pressure, the government later agreed to hold consultations with NBR officials before implementing the changes.
