Gebert and Hilary had been close friends since 1985 and in 1997 purchased a house together in Opōtiki in equal shares. The house, on Wellington Street, was now valued by Homes.co.nz at $535,000. In her will Hilary included the option for Gebert to purchase her share in the Wellington Street house for $100,000. He declared that Hilary’s draft unsigned will was to be her valid will.
