That means I grew up with two people with whom I had to compete and two others whom I had to prove wrong. My parents relaxed the rules as I got older but it hurt to see my brothers free to do as they pleased without any restrictions and my friends having fun without me. When guests visited us, my father would ask me to prepare the drinks even though my brothers were free to help. When I said “no”, his response would invariably be that a woman should know how to do these things. I wish that young girls could grow up without having to worry about anything other than living life the way they see fit.
