On the night between 11 and 12 September 2023, the eastern Libyan city of Derna was devastated by floods that caused thousands of deaths and the destruction of entire neighborhoods. The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (Unsmil) launched an appeal to start a "coordinated national program" for reconstruction which, to date, has never really started. “Agenzia Nova” spoke about it with Claudia Gazzini, senior analyst at the International Crisis Group (Icg) who recently conducted a visit to the disaster sites. In the meantime, adds Gazzini, the authorities in eastern Libya are carrying out a Gaddafi-era project to build around "2.000 Korean housing units" near Derna. These Gaddafi projects are finished, but the central issue of Derna, also as a social fabric, is not addressed", explains the analyst again.
