Kenya has partnered with a global non-profit to repurpose second-life lithium batteries to rehabilitate solar PV installations at schools, healthcare centres and hospitals. Second-life batteries forge a market in Africa’s zero-waste futureDiffer Community Power (DCP), an international provider of solar energy services to communities, has been selected to determine the feasibility of using second life lithium batteries. “Enabling the reuse of the batteries, therefore, enables the reuse of the entire solar PV plant. “EPA is working on a proposal for universal waste standards specially tailored for lithium batteries, separate from the existing general battery universal waste category. In the first five months of 2023, 115,000 tons of mostly lithium batteries were recycled.
