In a bid to facilitate the plan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed a contract with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Nov 6, 2023. Under the policy, rescued migrants must apply for asylum in Albania, where their applications will be scrutinised by Italian judges, Il Messaggero reports. Following Italy's lead, 15 other EU countries also signed agreements with Albania to process asylum seekers there. “The Italian government took the initiative to curb illegal migration to Italy and instead attract skilled workers through legal channels. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this week that Italy was setting an example for the rest of Europe with the policy.
