Photograph: European Pressphoto AgencyOver the course of this past year, the US government has imposed two rounds of sanctions against judges and prosecutors at the International Criminal Court. The intention of these sanctions, and the extraordinary difficulties they cause for the ICC judges, is obvious. They are aimed at sabotaging the work of the court and, in a larger sense, delegitimising the institutions of international law. The sanctions against ICC judges feel like an advance tremor of a future barbarism.
