“It was tough as the [civil] war was just over, it was completely different from the big teaching hospitals,” Sir Brian said. Sir Brian then worked on the design of the first GSK malaria vaccine RTS, S, which in 2021 became the world's first malaria vaccine and the first approved vaccine to battle a human parasitic disease. Professor Sir Brian Greenwood has trained the next generation of scientists in Africa to continue the fight against malaria.
