ISLAMABAD - The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) held a consultation in collaboration with Dehleez on the need for constitutional protection for local government by presenting its policy paper, proposing a constitutional amendment of Article 140A. Director Farah Zia in her introductory remarks, stressed the need for a more comprehensive constitutional protection for the local government bodies. Other participants also weighed in on the proposed amendment. AWP’s Farman Ali emphasized the importance of democratizing the political parties alongside constitutional amendments to strengthen local governance. Secretary General HRCP Harris Khalique concluded the proceedings by suggesting that that the local government needs to be de-bureaucratised.
