The Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act was enacted by the Awami League government in 2010The High Court has ruled that the immunity provision under the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act 2010, which regulates quick rental power plants, is illegal. Previously, on Sept 2, the court had issued a rule questioning the legality of the immunity and procurement-related sections of the quick rental legislation. When the Awami League government assumed power in 2009, it approved several rental and quick rental power plants to swiftly address a power crisis. However, the government had to pay substantial subsidies to purchase electricity from these plants at high prices, which ultimately burdened taxpayers. To legalise the rental power plants, the 'Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provisions) Act' was enacted in 2010.
