There seem to be rules in place about this film not queering the pitch for Godzilla X Kong, but these issues seem to have been put aide, and without any real fanfare or groundwork PR, Godzilla Minus One dropped with a worldwide splash on Netflix at the weekend. The maths says Godzilla Minus One > Godzilla x Kong, when it comes to profit if not gross income, and also in terms of artistic achievement, but why? This is easily the best Godzilla film I’ve seen, and there’s multiple reasons for that accolade. So forget all that ‘Godzilla is our friend’ stuff, Godzilla is about as much your bestie as Jaws the shark. One brief attack scene leaves an estimated 30,000 dead, so Godzilla is very much the spectre of mass destruction in Japan post WWII, which feels right. With striking special effects, a fearsome monster, much ingenuity and a strong political viewpoint, Godzilla Minus One really is quite a reboot, and certainly puts the goofy Hollywood version to shame.
