“They were lucky not to be burned to death,” Mr. Jung said in a phone interview on Sunday. Mr. Jung added that he was shocked by the Manchester attack — where two people were killed after a man drove a vehicle into worshipers and then attacked others with a knife — and by the suspected arson at the mosque on Saturday. “People don’t go to places of worship ever thinking that they may be attacked,” he said. On Sunday, the Sussex police said that they had also increased their presence at the scene of the suspected mosque arson to provide reassurance. “We understand the concerns this has caused within the community, and the impact that will be felt by the Muslim community as a result,” the police statement said.
