Cheruiyot Kirui's parents were looking forward to his triumph at the summit of Mt Everest and hoped that he would come back home alive. According to him, Kirui expressed his aspirations of becoming the first African to summit Mt Everest without supplemental oxygen. Ruth Kenduywo, Kirui's mother, recounted the agonising moments, clinging to the hope of his safe return as he embarked on the final stretch of his ascent.
