Mufti Abdul Malek, an Islamic law and Hadith scholar, has been appointed as the Khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. He replaces Waliur Rahman, who took the reins after Khatib Ruhul Amin disappeared following the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5. After the overthrow of the Awami League government by a student-led mass uprising, the then Khatib Ruhul Amin went into hiding. On Sept 20, Ruhul Amin suddenly reappeared at Baitul Mukarram, sparking tensions among devotees during Jummah prayers at the mosque. The religious affairs ministry suspended Khatib Ruhul Amin two days after the incident.
