The deal could increase Turkey’s over-sized influence in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. On January 2, Somalia suspended diplomatic ties with Ethiopia after Addis Ababa signed an agreement with the secessionist Somaliland region in Somalia to have access to the Red Sea. Osman observed that the commitment to building Somalia’s naval capabilities is a forward-thinking approach to ensuring the long-term security and safety of international maritime routes. “This aspect of the treaty not only benefits Somalia but also provides security assurances to global trade stakeholders reliant on these waterways,” he noted.
