Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to make substantial contributions to climate-resilient development in Africa – from predicting flooding patterns in Mozambique to optimising agri-food systems across the continent. These are some of the uses for AI, the UN Climate Change’s Initiative on Artificial Intelligence for Climate Action are exploring. The Biosphere Reserves as Observatories for Climate Change Adaptation in Southern Africa (Be-Resilient) uses AI to predict flooding patterns in Mozambique. Climate change challenges facing AfricaA recently held meeting of the UN’s Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Offices for North and West Africa highlighted the climate change challenges facing those two regions. Currently, 17 out of the 20 countries most threatened by climate change are in Africa and climate change already impacts 2% to 9% of national budgets across the continent, the meeting affirmed.
