SYLHET, July 30: A Sylhet court has sentenced eight people to death and another seven to life in prison in connection with the 2021 murder of school student Sumel.Judge Syeda Amina Farhin of the Sylhet Additional Judicial Magistrate's Court delivered the verdict on Wednesday, according to Assistant Public Prosecutor Kamal Hossain.The death row convicts are Saiful Alam, Abdul Jalil, and Nazrul, Sadrul, Miraz, Jamal, Shahin, and Anowar, all of whom were identified with single names.Ilias, Abdun Noor, Joynal, Ashik, Askir, Farid, and Akbar have been sent to jail for life.Court Clerk Al Amin Rana said, "The court has sentenced another 17 suspects to two years in prison each. Of the 32 suspects in the case, Mamunur Rashid is absconding. ""The rest were present in court. Prime suspect Saiful has been in jail for about three years and eight months after he was detained. "Citing the case documents, Rana said that Saiful - an expatriate living in the UK - had gone to forcibly take soil from the fields of Nazir Uddin in Bishwanath's Choitannagar village on May 1, 2021.�"bdnews24.com
