A program to distribute Ayurvedic medicines free of charge to the homes of COVID-19 infected patients and quarantined persons in the Western Province was launched today (August 30). The program is organized by the Western Provincial Department of Ayurveda. The program will continue to serve COVID-19 patients and quarantined families who wish to seek home remedies by resorting to Ayurvedic medicine. The Western Province Department of Ayurveda states that COVID-19 patients are being treated at home under the full supervision of 265 doctors. Community Health Medical Officers in 40 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Western Province carry out daily treatment of patients.

A consignment of 124,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived in the island this morning. This batch of vaccines is said to be a purchase made by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC). The batch of US-made Pfizer vaccines had reportedly arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) at around 2.30 a.m. onboard Qatar Airways flight QR-668. It was then transported from the airport to the special refrigerated storage at the National Blood Transfusion Center, Narahenpita. Sri Lanka had previously received a delivery of 76,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine on August 23 while the country also received 100,000 doses of the US-manufactured Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines on August 09 and August 16.

Sri Lanka Police have arrested 581 persons during a 24 hour window ending at 6.00 a.m. today (30). Accordingly, the arrested persons were taken into custody for violating the quarantine curfew and for breaching quarantine laws. Sri Lanka Police notes that 85 vehicles have been taken into custody as well. This brings the tally of arrests made in the country so far over the same offences to 61,587. Police also said that 639 persons and 316 vehicles leaving the Western Province were stopped and checked at 13 checkpoints within yesterday while another 1,153 individuals and 489 vehicles entering the province were also inspected.
