The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said over 700 kilometres of roads spreading across 11 states in the country would soon be completed. Mr Fashola said over N1.5 trillion would be spent on the projects by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). “Recall that in January this year, the council approved a memo for the NNPC to invest N1.9 trillion on our roads. The minister also said the council approved the amendment of outdated labour laws to meet globally accepted standards prescribed by the International Labour Organisation. The phase two is what the council approved today, they had earlier approved phase one which is minimal infrastructure and cloud activity,” the minister said.

The Nigeria Army, on Wednesday, completed pre-deployment training for 172 troops for a peacekeeping mission in Guinea Bissau. The troops began their pre-deployment training on March 21 at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peace Keeping Centre (MLAILPKC), Jaji, Kaduna state. The army’s chief of operations, Taoreed Lagbaja, said the troops would be Nigeria’s Company 2 Stabilisation Mission in the ECOWAS-support mission in Guinea Bissau. He explained that the pre-deployment training was to refresh and polish troops’ knowledge and expertise in peace-support operations. He thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, for his guidance and support to the centre, which enabled the successful completion of the pre-deployment training.

The Borno State Police Command has said it is investigating a case involving a soldier who allegedly shot dead a policeman, Sgt Ahmed Ali, who intercepted his vehicle carrying a substance believed to be Indian hemp. When contacted by The PUNCH, the acting spokesman for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident on Wednesday noting that the command was investigating it. It was gathered that the suspect is currently under the custody of the military while the vehicle is parked at the Benisheik police station. A source from the military described the shooting as a mistake as a soldier named Ibrahim Waberi fired at the vehicle in an attempt to stop it from being moved by the deceased. “His shot mistakenly hit the deceased but the accused soldier is in custody for investigation,” he said.

The Director-General of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Engr. Akin Olateru has commended the Federal Government for boosting aviation safety in the country with the recent procurement of fire tenders for airports. While underscoring the importance of firefighters as first responders during occurrences, the NAFSA president sought collaboration between NAFSA and NSIB to further boost aviation safety in the country. The NSIB boss lauded the critical role of aviation firefighters in air safety and urged them to assist NSIB in preserving the evidence at the crash sites. A committee to draft the MoU, which includes the NAFSA president, the NSIB Company Secretary, Alhaji Dalhatu Kakangi, and General Manager, Safety and Security, Mr Olumide Osineye was constituted.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday refused to grant the request of the All Progressives Congress to remove Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, from the governorship seat following his defection from the party to the Peoples Democratic Party. Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo held that a similar request on the subject matter had been voided by the Court of Appeal in several judgments. Listed as 1st to 3rd defendants in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/449/2022 are Independent National Electoral Commission, Peoples Democratic Party, and Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal respectively. APC had asked the court to declare the governorship seat of Sokoto State vacant on the account of defection by Tambuwal to another party. The party claimed that Tambuwal who won the Sokoto governorship election in 2019 under the APC must vacate his seat if he decided to go to another party.

Russia launched a drone attack on Ukraine’s southern port city of Odesa early Wednesday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, authorities said. Kruk said Ukraine’s air defences had destroyed most of the attacking drones but some civilian infrastructure was hit. The Black Sea port of Odesa was a favourite holiday destination for many Ukrainians and Russians before President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in February last year. Officials of the Federal Government told The PUNCH exclusively that the fresh pay increase, tagged consequential allowance, would lead to a 40 per cent rise in the current pay of government workers. He said, “Consequential allowance Salaries will be increased by 40 per cent for civil servants from level 1 to level 17. The salary increase is effective from January 2023. However, leaders of the organised labour on Monday described the proposed pay rise as a meagre allowance that would not be equivalent to a 40 per cent increase in workers’ salaries. He, however, stressed that civil servants were yet to receive the payment.
