It’s not how commercial agricultural interests have funded culture war groups to denigrate the debate into ‘Maaaaaaari is stealing da water’. The pure genius of 3 Waters is the total focus on pipes and drains which amount to 1% of water ways. That’s 140million humans pissing and shitting into every water way we have throughout NZ. That ruling said Māori water rights existed and that it was up to the Crown and Māori to negotiate that. Unfortunately, Labour were too cowardly to make this argument when 3 Waters was first released and it’s ended up as an existential race war.

Councils are going to great lengths to avoid dumping 350,000 tonnes of food waste into landfills each year. It can handle 75,000 tonnes a year of food scraps from food manufacturers and councils. Bouskova says anaerobic digestion is particularly suited to food waste, such as dairy, meat and fish, because the smell can be contained. That is a concern because, while some council waste water treatment systems can cope with that, many can’t. Scottish businesses producing more than 5kg of food scraps per week have had to divert them from landfill since 2015.

An article about the stage show The Savage Coloniser published on Stuff earlier this year, which contained a poem complainants said incited "racial violence", has been labelled "not a breach of professional standards" by the Media Council. Stuff published the poem The 250th Anniversary of James Cook's Arrival in New Zealand - written by author Tusiata Avia - which depicted hunting down "white men like" the British explorer. The poem was published within an article about Avia's book The Savage Coloniser making its stage show debut. Multiple complaints were submitted to the Media Council and Creative New Zealand received backlash from the ACT Party after revelations the stage show received taxpayer funding. The Media Council, in a decision released on Friday, said those complaints have not been upheld.

The revised Three Waters policy gives councils more control but dilutes the rationale for reform and could increase the cost of colossal infrastructure upgrades. Local Government Minister Kieran McAnulty’s revised ‘Affordable Water Reform’ attempts some sort of magic trick, or perspective illusion, to achieve this. Governance conundrumThe revised reform would see local water assets divided between 10 management entities, drawn primarily from regional council boundaries. Saving for someThe Government has repositioned the revised Affordable Water Reform as something that will save ratepayers’ money. Manji said bond investors will want the Crown to underwrite these water entities, but would still demand a premium over regular government bonds.

Here's our summary of key economic events overnight that affect New Zealand, with news the long-anticipated weaknesses in the American labour market may now be starting to show. American producer prices rose +2.7% in the year to March, a sharpish drop from the February +4.9% on the same basis. More interestingly, the annualised rate of change between February and March was a deflationary -6.0%, a twist no-one saw coming. The continuing strength of their labour market puts more RBA rate rises back on the table as they may have turned dovish too soon. And perhaps we should also note that natural gas prices are back to very low levels, levels we had prior in the 1990s.

Head coach of New Zealand women’s senior national team, Jitka Klimková, believes her team didn’t do enough against the Super Falcons of Nigeria last Tuesday. The New Zealanders lost 3-0 to Super Falcons, with goals from Jennifer Echegini, Onome Ebi and Desire Oparanozie. “It was disappointing – specifically in front of the goal,” the coach was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz. “We gave up a goal from a set play, we gave up a goal from a cross.

Supply chain issues cost New Zealand companies an average of around $1.7 billion in lost sales each year, according to a study. New Zealand is more vulnerable to supply chain issues than other developed countries. With an economy worth about $360 billion, the country exports premium products like wine, lumber, produce, meat, and dairy products. According to supply chain consulting firm TMX Global, unreliability in the supply chain costs Kiwi companies an average of 0.47% in lost revenue, or a total of around $1.69 billion lost every year. The war in Ukraine, climate change, and remaining Covid-19 limitations are all factors that are impacting supply chain costs.

EnergyNo Lake Onslow pumped hydro before late 2037Cabinet documents and a 429-page indicative business case reveal new details of the costliest energy project proposed in New Zealand, Marc Daalder reportsA multi-billion dollar pumped hydroelectric station at Lake Onslow in the South Island won't be commissioned until late 2037 and could take another one to three years to fill to maximum capacity. The new date raises questions for the Government, which sees Lake Onslow or an alternative portfolio of renewable electricity options as crucial to reaching 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035. Lake Onslow would store five terawatt hours of electricity and have capacity of 1000 megawatts to ease dry year pressure. The scheme could produce 570 megawatts of electricity and store 2.7 terawatt hours, according to a report by consultancy Stantec. A "do nothing" scenario, in which fossil fuels remain the dry year solution, wasn't entertained by the NZ Battery Project business case.

“It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark”That’s the quote that opens Mike Bush’s review into the immediate response to the floods in Auckland in late January. Nonetheless, Bush’s review debunks any suggestion that visible leadership and frequent public communications during a time of crisis are somehow optional. The Herald’s Simon Wilson summarises (paywalled) one of the key questions at the heart of Bush’s report. Bush’s report makes 17 recommendations and Brown has accepted all of them. No one from the office of minister for emergency response was interviewed as part of Bush’s review.

He said he’d worked closely with local government leaders over the past few months to find ways to progress the “long overdue water infrastructure reforms”. Extending the number of publicly owned water entities to 10 will give every district council representation over their local water services entities. Its main responsibility would be appointing a professional board to independently govern each of the water services entities. “Fundamentally, it’s about water infrastructure and it’s about making sure that we’re dealing with the country’s water infrastructure deficit. Let’s call it what it is; it’s about making sure we have affordable water infrastructure improvements.”“There is a massive bill coming down the pipeline, if you’ll excuse the pun, in terms of upgrading our water infrastructure.

In 2021 he said he was a fan of minimum wage increases, but only if they could be afforded. It comes after he said in April that the increase in the minimum wage — from $18.90 to $20 — was hurting small businesses. As a result, it’s a big disincentive for them to invest back in their business and actually create new jobs.”He also complained about the effect that minimum wage increases were having on his morning coffee. More recently he has insisted that tax cuts that would see the Prime Minister’s net income increase by $349 per week and the net income of someone on the minimum wage increase by $2.15 was somehow fair.
