Severe flash floods that struck Nairobi over the weekend have reignited debate about urban planning, drainage systems and environmental management. Speaking to Citizen TV, experts and officials have pointed to years of unchecked development, blocked waterways and pressure on the city’s ageing infrastructure. “When allowing buildings, officials should look at how much the development is likely to contribute to the water run off and how to deal with it,” he said. Iran's Assembly of Experts has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei to replace his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country's new supreme leader, state media reports. In 2019, Mojtaba Khamenei was sanctioned by the United States as part of a group of individuals “who are appointees of or have acted for or on behalf of” Iran’s then Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. While Mojtaba Khamenei has got the job, he clearly is not going to have the same powerful position as his father who built his influence up over 40 years. But from the perspective of the 88 member clerical body that selected Mojtaba Khamenei, it’s a fight for survival. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party suffered a major setback on Saturday after Lurambi MP Titus Khamala defected to the ruling UDA. Khamala, who is serving his second term as MP, switched camps at his Shibuli home on Sunday night after a four-hour deliberation. He was received by members of the Western region presidential campaign team, that is pushing for President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027. Khamala said he had joined UDA to boost the chances of President Ruto in winning votes in the Western region.
