FA Cup: Mansfield 1 Arsenal 2Eberechi Eze’s thumping strike saw Arsenal survive a scare at Mansfield as Mikel Arteta’s men reached the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win that keeps their quadruple hopes alive. However, the spirited Stags’ memorable FA Cup journey and hopes of an almighty shock would be ended by the man who scored when Crystal Palace won the competition last season. Marli Salmon among the starters on a day when fellow 16-year-old Max Dowman became Arsenal’s youngest ever FA Cup player and was denied by an early Liam Roberts save at a sold-out One Call Stadium. Cristhian Mosquera saw an effort deflect over moments later, but Mansfield responded well against an Arsenal side looking uncomfortable in an unfamiliar back three. Jaden Dixon came on for debut in place of seemingly injured Riccardo Calafiori and Dowman was replaced by star Bukayo Saka, who was denied superbly by Liam Roberts.

And that is why it was no surprise when Evans fired Mansfield level early in the second half. It was true international quality, and as much as Mansfield continued to show heart, it was enough to keep Arsenal firing on all fronts.

It could happen. It very well may happen if both teams keep going as well as they are. If it doesn’t, I’d say the one place Cork and Limerick may not meet is the league final. That might sound ludicrous with Cork showing no signs of taking their foot off the gas, and when a league final would be perfect preparation for Limerick when they don’t play on the opening weekend of the championship. I’m just not sure though, that Limerick really want to meet Cork in a league final three weeks before they meet them in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
