But if you’re after a truly dependable companion, you may be best off with a dog. That, at least, is the implication of a study which found that the emotional bonds owners share with their dogs outshine almost every kind of human relationship. The sole exception is the tie between parent and child. More than 700 dog owners were asked to rate their relationships with their pets according to 13 criteria, including how much support, affection and loyalty they felt they derived from them. They also did the same for their relationships with four humans: a romantic partner, a best friend, a child and their “closest kin”.

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, The Pope’s death ushers in a difficult period for the Roman Catholic Church. A man devoted to the poor, having grown up in Argentina during the postwar rise of right-wing states — many of which had harboured Nazis — the Pope had seen how they were supported by senior Catholic churchmen as well as the military hardmen controlling many South American countries. He saw the emergence of a strong swing from Catholicism to Pentecostalism and other free churches, where a welcoming hand was extended to the poor and to Catholics concerned about the disregard shown to them by their own cardinals and bishops. When he was elected Pope, he foresaw the battle he was likely to have with ultra-conservative forces in

With horned Highland cattle, neat stone walls and a tiny church that dates from the 15th century on its land, Cowage Farm in Foxley, in southwestern England, hardly looks like a crime scene. But as Tom Collins completed paperwork in his farmhouse one morning, an employee interrupted to ask what he’d done with a computer screen in one of his tractors. It turned out that the equipment, along with two GPS systems, had been stolen from two farm vehicles overnight. Standing in the yard where the theft took place, Mr. Collins said the most unnerving thing was that criminals must have watched him to know where his tractors would be. They are also under pressure from an overhaul of the subsidies available to them after Brexit, and from inflation and tax changes that have prompted tractor protests outside Parliament.

The Times of Central Asia has previously reported on the challenges Kyrgyz labor migrants face in Europe, with many choosing to leave Russia due to frequent legal issues and labor disputes. In 2022, CTHR signed a memorandum of cooperation with British recruitment company AGRI-HR to facilitate seasonal employment for Kyrgyz nationals in the UK. According to CTHR, other favorable countries for Kyrgyz workers include Germany, Italy, France, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. Most opportunities in these regions are in agriculture and related fields, and Kyrgyz citizens can legally work there under established programs.
