As Marillyn said, our 2025 first quarter results demonstrate a strong start to the year for subscriber growth, revenue growth, AOP growth margin expansion and free cash flow generation. We also continue to operate efficiently while making disciplined investments aimed at further differentiating our high-quality journalism and digital products. Over that same period, we returned approximately $81 million to shareholders consisting of approximately $59 million in share repurchases and approximately $22 million in dividends. Wirecutter affiliate revenues and licensing revenues continue to perform well.

Photographer who served Hendon Times for almost 50 years dies aged 76
A much-loved photographer who served a North London weekly for almost 50 years has died aged 76. Tributes have been paid to Peter Beal, who joined the Hendon Times aged 19 and spent the next five decades documenting life across North London and Borehamwood. He retired in 2018 and died at his home in Temple Fortune, near Golders Green, on 28 March. She added: “He was humble and didn’t want any recognition – he just wanted to do the job he loved. “He would go to the end of the earth for you and make you feel safe without making you feel small.”

India becomes Tide’s largest market by customers, surpassing UK
Oliver Prill, CEO, TideBENGALURU: India has overtaken the UK to become the largest market by customer count for small and medium enterprises-focused (SME) fintech platform Tide, according to global CEO Oliver Prill . “India is close to 7 lakh, the same as in the UK, and is now growing over that,” Prill said during an interview with TOI, adding that the company has seen steady growth since entering the Indian market in 2022.“So the UK is a small market… India is actually bigger in terms of that,” he added. “That's just a good rule of thumb across the world, so let's take India being highly entrepreneurial as 10%,” he said. One such product is the “structured partners” solution, first rolled out in India, which addresses the informal business relationships common among micro and small enterprises.“In the India market, you see a lot of small and micro merchants working with larger entities. “Often it is UK first because it’s more established,” he noted.

He is right to give the economy centre stage in step five. Governments that back the right industries with financial support, invest in retraining their employees, see IT as a bedrock of the economy, allow for immigration to support said industries and collaborate with the “right minds” are in fact driving many of the other steps listed by Hague. As he says, backing stronger defence and better healthcare cannot be achieved without economic growth. Hence, why do politicians disregard evidence showing that UK productivity from the public sector grew by 0 per cent from 1997 to 2022

But making the UK less attractive for the world’s most talented young people – and imperilling UK universities in the process – is not the way to go about it. If a sharp reduction in demand from international students is triggered when the White Paper is published next week, it will immediately hit the key September intake to degree courses. The UK is keen on bringing taxation issues within the purview of the BIT, something about which India has reservations, they said. "Parliament has the sovereign powers on taxation and that cannot be brought within the BIT. But hopefully these issues can be resolved soon," one of the persons told ET on condition of anonymity. Earlier, there were plans to conclude all three deals simultaneously.India insists on exhaustion of local remedies before an investor can take the state to arbitration for a dispute, something that many countries, including the UK, are opposed to under the investor state dispute settlement As per the model BIT text, investors need to exhaust local solutions for at least five years before arbitration.

Over 60,000 IT workers can gain around Rs 4,000 crore, govt estimates suggested.Govt has secured significant commitments for service suppliers in digitally-delivered services, specially professional services such as architecture, engineering, computer-related services and telecom, apart from professionals such as yoga instructors, musicians and chefs, officials said.PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that trade deal with the UK will boost economic activity in the country, while creating new opportunities for Indian businesses and MSMEs. He sought to position the agreement as part of a broader economic strategy.Pointing to trade agreements signed by UAE, Australia, and Mauritius in recent years, Modi, at an event organised by ABP Network, said, "India is not just undertaking reforms but is actively engaged with the world to become a vibrant trade and commerce hub. "Apart from opening new markets through free trade agreements (FTAs), govt is also seeking to create opportunities for Indian companies to be part of the global value chain.PM Modi further said that the deal with the United Kingdom will help catalyse trade, investment, growth and job creation in both the economies.He emphasised that this agreement between two major open-market economies will add a new chapter in trade and economic cooperation, benefiting the development of both nations. The UK Home Office has not revealed details around the expected crackdown, first reported in 'The Times', with more on the plans expected to be laid out in its proposed 'Immigration White Paper' later this month.However, official government statistics reveal that the largest increase in asylum claims came from Pakistani nationals, rising 79 per cent in the last year to 10,542. "To tackle abuse by foreign nationals who arrive on work and study visas and go on to claim asylum, we are building intelligence on the profile of these individuals to identify them earlier and faster," a Home Office spokesperson said. "We keep the visa system under constant review and where we detect trends, which may undermine our immigration rules, we will not hesitate to take action. Under our Plan for Change, our upcoming 'Immigration White Paper' will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system," the spokesperson said.
