And in 1988—after the crash in 1987—there was a systemic change in the stock market with the implementation of circuit breakers and collars. WSJ: What are your expectations from a normal presidential cycle? The one time we had a re-elected Republican with a Republican Senate and Democratic House was under Ronald Reagan, and the market gained 27.7% in the postelection year.
