Yesterday evening the nation stopped, as it has done for several weeks, to applaud NHS and care workers. Many of those same workers were until yesterday liable to pay a large fee to use the NHS themselves. The government introduced the charge in 2015 to be levied by all people in Britain using the NHS who were from outside the member states of the European Economic Area. The government belatedly scrapped the charge yesterday for all NHS workers, including ancillary staff, independent health workers and care workers. The NHS is free at the point of use, funded from general taxation.
