MANILA, Philippines – Not just the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, but the whole of Asia basked in glory as the Philippine-led Asian consortium earned the rights to host the 2023 FIBA World Cup. FIBA, the international basketball association, toasted the winning effort of the cage federations of the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia as the biggest moment in Asian basketball in 2017. It’s the defining moment in the year for FIBA Asia as it wasn’t a simple feat. A groundbreaking event in 2017 was the inaugural window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers, which happened from Nov. 23-27 across the region. But for FIBA, the most precious jewel in Asia’s cap in 2017 was the result of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 hosting bids.
