CAIRO – 30 March 2022: Cairo began receiving requests of holding Mawaid el-Rahman, or charity iftars, after a two-Ramadan hiatus due to Covid-19. The charitable gatherings in the streets at dusk will return to the streets of Cairo, bringing a lot of sense of community and the usual joy and charity of Ramadan. The guests are usually the poor or people who did not go home in time. The authorities regularly check Mawaid el-Rahman to make sure the food is safe to consume. Mawaid el-Rahman also must be held in a manner that does not disrupt traffic, but rather on the sidewalk, in parks, or near mosques.
