Omar Mateen wanted to be a police officer, his former wife Sitora Yusufiy told reporters Sunday. He worked as a correctional officer at a juvenile delinquent center and had applied to the police academy, she said. Yusufiy added that she believes Mateen was mentally ill, and that probably had more to do with Sunday's events than any radical beliefs. She hasn't spoken to him for the last seven years. She said that she was with him for about four months, and that he physically abused her and kept her isolated from her family members during their brief relationship.
