Elite climbers responsible for own mistakes, mentor says

The NZ Alpine Team - an elite group of young climbers - has lost five members since 2013. Mentors in an elite climbing team provide skills, safety and encouragement but members are responsible for their own mistakes, a team leader says. New Zealand Alpine Team climbers Conor Jon Neil Smith, 22, and Sarwan Philip Chand, 27, fell 100 metres to their death in the remote Darran Mountains, in April 2017. NEW ZEALAND ALPINE TEAM Conor Smith was one of two men killed in a fall while climbing in Fiordland. Chand and Smith were driven, strong climbers and it was "totally appropriate" they were climbing together without a mentor, Joll said.
