A cold snap for the south and east of New Zealand will bring snow to the mountain passes and chilly temperatures for the last days of August. Snow is expected to arrive on Sunday night, affecting any essential drivers using the Lewis, Arthur’s and Porters passes in the South Island, MetService forecasters have warned. “A couple of cold fronts move up the South Island this evening and over the east of the North Island [Monday],” the forecast says. Up to 1cm of snow is expected to settle on the Porters Pass road between 8pm Sunday and 1am Monday. Snow flurries will affect Arthur’s Pass for about two hours from 8pm on Sunday, but the snow is not expected to settle.
