The army's bomb experts have destroyed a canister thought to contain phosphorus that was found washed up on a Bay of Plenty beach on Saturday. Kathy Goodwin of Tuapiro Rd, across the bay from where the canister washed up, saw police activity in the area earlier in the day. "We grabbed the binoculars but could see that it had come from the little beach area," she said. Police received a call from fire services on Saturday afternoon after reports that a mysterious object had washed ashore in Shelly Bay.
