As the UK approaches its ninth week of lockdown, we continue to face a challenging and uncertain outlook — a health crisis that remains fragile and unresolved, and an economic crisis the shape of which is only starting to unfold. What is clear is that Covid-19 will have a deep and lasting impact on all of us, our society and our economy. Fundamental questions are being asked by millions about the future shape of work, the way we go about our lives, what we consider important and the very fabric of society. Understandably, banks have come under scrutiny. One often expressed comment is that the big banks, bailed out by the taxpayer in the financial crisis, now have a duty to step up.
