Regarding your editorial “Rethinking the Virus Shutdown” (March 20): As someone who is statistically at high risk for Covid-19, I am indescribably grateful to my fellow citizens for the heroic sacrifices they are making to keep me safe. But I don’t think trashing the economy is the long-term answer for anybody. An economy functions on emotion: hope and fear, optimism and pessimism. Just a few weeks ago, there was a great deal of optimism. The stock markets were at all-time highs, unemployment at historic lows, wages were rising and there were more job seekers than jobs.
