To date the level of sophistication of the 3 Waters debate has been ‘da Maaaris is stealing da water’ which I believe is smoke screening the far bigger issues around 3 Waters, and that is who is actually directing this, Wellington or Beijing? The purpose of the all expenses paid delegation was to investigate Scotland’s infrastructure innovations since devolution, especially their water system which ended up being the structural basis for 3 Waters. Infrastructure NZ comprises of the China Construction Bank, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and the Bank of China. These are the domestic pimps for China’s Belt and Road project, why are we allowing Chinese interests to influence our infrastructure? We have been so easily distracted by ‘da Māoris is stealing da water’ we have not realised the corporate Chinese banking interests who are actually directing our infrastructure plans!

This week before Cyclone Gabrielle hit there was a noted level of scepticism about how bad things would get. They were both subsequently shown to be completely, and tragically wrong, just as the right wing media has been over the past 30 years when it comes to climate change. “Sidney Powell is lying,” [Tucker Carlson] wrote to a producer, the Dominion lawsuit alleges. Trump, Carlson said, was a “demonic force” who was good at “destroying things. Well both media outlets have been pushing ideas without proof in order to give their listener base their daily feed of grumpiness.

Wafting across the United States and into the attention of an alarmed national and global public, a giant Chinese balloon has changed Americans' awareness of all the stuff floating in the air, and how defence officials watch for it and respond. President Joe Biden said Thursday (local time) that the US is updating its guidelines for monitoring and reacting to unknown aerial objects. It comes after the discovery of a suspected Chinese spy balloon transiting the country triggered high-stakes drama, including the US shootdowns of that balloon, and three smaller ones days later. That awareness kicked into overdrive this month, after the US military and then the US public spotted the Chinese balloon floating down from the High North. Post big Chinese balloon, US defence officials are expected to keep up broader monitoring so that balloons remain on the radar, but fine-tune the response.

The death toll from Cyclone Gabrielle has climbed to 11, as thousands of people remained missing a week after the devastating storm struck the North Island. There has been severe damage to homes, farms, businesses and infrastructure, and the death toll includes a child and two firefighters. Of those, almost 40,000 were in Hawke's Bay, out of a population of about 170,000. Police have sent an extra 100 officers to Hawke's Bay and nearby Tairawhiti, including to isolated areas, and the New Zealand Herald reported roadblocks around a rural Hawke’s Bay village to deter looters. The Herald understands officers told residents the checkpoints could be installed as long as no firearms were involved.

The Opposition has routinely attacked Labour’s work on co-governance between the Crown and Māori. …this concern for political narrative may be strategic, but tactically it has left Marae without the agency to face the very challenges they are now enduring. Many Marae are located in places because of very specific culturally important factors. Where we can, Marae should stay where they are and get repaired with extra resourcing to ensure they are points of resilience in those communities. Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

The Salvation Army released its State of the Nation 2023 report – Nga Rourou Whakaiti this week. It’s full of graphs and descriptions of what poverty looks like in a land of plenty. Under Labour the number went from just over 5,000 when the Ardern government came to power to over 25,000 last year. These number have been slowing pegged back to around 18,000 now under sinking lid policies but the revenue lost to communities continues to rise. How much longer can New Zealand afford to carry the rich?

Police are investigating a death in the Hawke’s Bay region in the aftermath of the cyclone. The body was found this morning and police believe the death was “related to Cyclone Gabrielle”. The tragedy has hit hard in Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti Gisborne, where seven people have now been confirmed dead, including a 2-year-old girl and the father of a rugby league star. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins yesterday warned there were also “grave fears” for others, given 4549 people were still listed as uncontactable by whānau and friends. Almost 2000 people also remained in evacuation centres in Hawke’s Bay, while potentially up to 1000 residents in that region and Tairāwhiti were beyond the reach of emergency services.

It was, ‘Far, that’s a cool name for a speed metal band’ … I stole the Motorhead font and wrote ‘S.H.I.H.A.D’. Pacifier’s album wasn’t able to be released until a contract was signed. “Who would call a fucking band ‘Pacifier’? When it came time to release Love is the New Hate, Shihad reversed their decision and disowned the name Pacifier. It’s called, ‘The Pacifier Album’ and the name on the cover is the same one Toogood messed up the spelling of all those years ago: Shihad.
