The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) today delivered another 0.5% rate hike, lifting the official cash rate to 4.75%:In delivering its decision, the RBNZ noted that “the OCR still needs to increase… to ensure inflation returns to within its target range over the medium term”. “While there are early signs of price pressure easing, core consumer price inflation remains too high, employment is still beyond its maximum sustainable level, and near-term inflation expectations remain elevated”. “Labour shortages remain a significant constraint on economic activity, contributing to heightened wage inflation. People are moving jobs at an elevated pace, consistent with labour shortages and strong demand”, the RBNZ added. “While there are early signs of demand easing it continues to outpace supply, as reflected in strong domestic inflation”.

Auckland Council CEO Jim Stabback resigned halfway through his five year term for personal reasons. Stabback began the role in 2020, and it is understood that there has been conflict between him and the mayor since Wayne Brown won the mayoralty last October. NZ Herald Super City reporter Bernard Orsman says Jim Stabback has not commented any explanation beyond 'personal reasons' for his resignation. Bernard Orsman has observed that there has been tension between Stabback and Brown on both sides, but that doesn't signify that the mayor had a hand in Stabback resigning. LISTEN ABOVE

During Cyclones Hale and Gabrielle the poor management of exotic plantations – primarily pine – has again led to extensive damage in Tairāwhiti. Among the key drivers of the current problems in Tairāwhiti are the large areas of exotic tree plantations that were established with government support after the devastation of Cyclone Bola. There should be no further harvesting in Tairāwhiti plantations until this exercise has been completed. We also need to identify those areas that currently lack plantations but should never be planted in exotic tree crops (for any purpose). The consequences of short-term thinkingFor too long we have been fixated in Aotearoa with maximising short-term returns from exotic tree crops without thinking about long-term consequences.

Wednesday, 22 February, 2023 - 15:24"Government Minister Michael Wood has jumped on the gaslighting bandwagon, telling the victims of Cyclone Gabrielle that he knows better than them," says ACT’s Police spokesperson Chris Baillie. "Wood was answering questions on behalf of Police Minister Stuart Nash in Parliament. "Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, Police Minister Stuart Nash and Michael Wood have all told them they’re wrong and that they know better. "The Police Commissioner needs to ask the Prime Minister to invoke Section 9 of the Defence Act. Looting gangsters might not think they’re so tough when they meet the NZDF.

Turnbull is not the only executive who has discussed needed changes within NZ infrastructure given the recent calamities. “We’ve managed to weather that one, now we’re getting storms. Cyclone Gabrielle’s total costs are still unknown, but Turnbull restated Tower’s resiliency and the company’s preparedness with its reinsurer. “We are increasing our allowance for large events from 30 to 40 million,” Turnbull said. We’ll do that today, and we’ll make sure to do it tomorrow as well.”What are your thoughts on this story?

Māori issues‘It sends shivers down my spine what we manage to achieve’Newton Central School has honed its co-governance model for a quarter of a century. – Margie Tukerangi, Newton Central School“Our co-governance model is based on the Treaty settlement. It’s never happened at Newton Central School, but it’s one of the concerns often brought up about co-governance. The Three Waters legislation, as it stands, has safeguards against someone using the consensus model to hijack the process. Andrews says widening out the co-governance model into other organisations isn’t just a nice to have; it’s critical.

A Coroner will investigate the mysterious disappearance of an Invercargill schoolboy and his stepfather, eight years after they vanished. The bodies were never found and rumours that Mr Beckenridge staged their deaths have swirled ever since. Mr Beckenridge met Ms Lu while they were working in Afghanistan in 2006. The couple later moved to Queenstown but their relationship broke down in 2014, shortly after Ms Lu moved to Invercargill to begin a hairdressing course. While police had followed up on potential sightings of Mr Beckenridge and his stepson in New Zealand and overseas, their inquiries proved fruitless.
