Joe Schmidt is considering throwing his hat into the ring to become the next All Blacks head coach, according to reports in New Zealand. Currently, Crusaders coach Scott Robertson and Japan’s Jamie Joseph are considered the leading contenders to succeed Ian Foster, but the race for New Zealand’s top coaching job could take an interesting twist. According to Stuff.co.nz, while All Blacks assistant coach Schmidt has not yet put himself in the running, he is considering it after “being bitten by the coaching bug”. The 57-year-old stepped down from a successful seven-year tenure with Ireland in 2019 to return to New Zealand and has since expressed no desire to return as a national head coach. However, having settled back home, and with the support of both senior players and the current All Blacks coaching staff, Schmidt could yet be convinced to put himself forward as a candidate.

Recently, New Zealand has been at the forefront of some significant strategic changes to its approach to problem gambling. But, the unfortunate truth is, not everyone can understand the importance of playing responsibly and the potential repercussions of gambling harm. Because of the hidden nature of the majority of problem gambling, this makes it a significantly difficult issue to tackle. Stopping problem gambling before it is completely out of control means that people need to disclose these problems earlier on – hence the campaign to reduce stigma. The Ministry was not hesitant to remark that problem gambling harm levels had not reduced since 2012, and so the current strategy was clearly not working as it should be.

Former Leinster and Ireland coach Joe Schmidt is strongly considering putting his name forward to be the next head coach of the All Blacks according to reports in New Zealand. Indeed, the process could have a knock-on effect to one of Schmidt’s old teams, with Leo MacDonald heavily touted for a role in the set-up. MacDonald has been linked with Leinster and Scotland, although Leo Cullen distanced himself from that speculation last weekend. Schmidt is currently working as assistant to Ian Foster who has criticised the decision to appoint his successor before this year’s Rugby World Cup. He is credited with many of the improvements that led to the All Blacks bouncing back from the Series defeat to winning the Rugby Championship.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) on Tuesday lifted the official cash rate (OCR) another 0.25%, the 10th consecutive hike. This is a worrying prospect, given monetary conditions will tighten significantly even without further rate hikes from the RBA. According to RBA’s own estimates, around one third of all home loan borrowers are on fixed mortgages, many of which were originated over the pandemic at rates of around 2%:Nearly 900,000 borrowers, or 23% of Australia’s total mortgage book, will this year switch from these cheap pandemic fixed rates to variable mortgages with rates that are more than double current levels. The next chart from Morgan Stanley highlights the extent of this fixed rate “mortgage cliff”, with the volume of fixed rate mortgages expiring rising precipitously from April, peaking in May, and then remaining at high levels for the remainder of the year:Given the size of the monetary tightening to come, which comes at a time when the economy is slowing and unemployment is rising, the RBA is playing with fire on interest rates. If it continues to tighten over the months ahead, it risks plunging the economy into a consumer-led recession.

Former skipper Kane Williamson is expected to join the squad late due to his grandmother’s demise on Thursday. It is a sad time for the Williamson family. Kane Williamson was instrumental in New Zealand’s epic one-run victory over England and scored 132 runs in the second innings after being asked to follow on. Still, there is far more to the foreign policy shifts than just a sharper tone (and potentially an upgrade in substance) when it comes to Ukraine. A formal ‘Defence Policy Review’ process was announced last July, with a rather generous final reporting date set for mid-2024. Under the original terms of reference for the Defence Policy Review, an initial draft of a new defence policy and strategy was to be submitted by October 2022, while a ‘future force design principles statement’ was expected by this April. As if to underline this, Mahuta met in Singapore not with her foreign minister counterpart, Vivian Balakrishnan, but with Singaporean defence minister Ng Eng Hen. Geoffrey Miller is the Democracy Project’s geopolitical analyst and writes on current New Zealand foreign policy and related geopolitical issues.

The women discuss how they learnt about polyamory, how they deal with jealousy and how they navigate those feelings. While she doesn’t see this as different to monogamous relationships, Upton says it requires people to be “more of an expert”. “People that are poly tend to have better communication skills and better relationship skills than people who aren’t, because they know you need to put in far more focus when you are having more than just one primary relationship.”

Question time from ParliamentNational Party leader Christopher Luxon has challenged Chris Hipkins on the blow out in consultants and contractors in the public sector – but Hipkins got a jab back at him for his own use of consultants. The ghosts of Hipkinses past were dragged up as Luxon questioned Hipkins on a 2018 statement that Labour would reduce its reliance on expensive consultants and contractors - something Labour had criticised National for when in Opposition. It sparked an exchange in which Hipkins agreed with Luxon that there should be less use of contractors while also defending the use of them. Act leader David Seymour then poked fun at the Government’s swift u-turn on its draft transport plan after Transport Minister Michael Wood pivoted from saying climate change was the priority on Monday morning to saying the cyclone rebuild was the priority by yesterday afternoon. Seymour noted that statement had said New Zealanders had to adjust their behaviours in a number of ways to contend with climate change, and asked whether Wood was a case study for that.
