Made-in-Malaysia Covid-19 vaccine expected to be ready in 2024
PETALING JAYA: The Covid-19 vaccine currently in development in Malaysia is also being designed as a booster shot, says Institute for Medical Research (IMR) director Dr Tahir Aris. IMR is working with experts from Universiti Putra Malaysia and the Veterinary Research Institute, which is under the Veterinary Services Department. Dr Tahir said he hoped Malaysia’s Covid-19 vaccines would match the quality of those produced overseas. “The initiative to develop the Covid-19 vaccine goes beyond the current pandemic, as it will prepare Malaysia in case of future outbreaks. It was reported that a budget of RM3.1mil was approved for the development of Covid-19 vaccines for laboratory and animal studies only.

PETALING JAYA: For many Malaysians, they are relieved to have received the appointment dates for their second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in their MySejahtera app. On Thursday, the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that those who participated in the AstraZeneca opt-in initiative would soon be notified of their second appointment. So he has applied for two days leave from work in anticipation of some side effects after he gets his second jab later. Writer Ashley Khoo, 39, from Kuala Lumpur, said it felt good getting her second jab confirmation since her first one on May 24. Syngenta's RM41.60b Shanghai IPO to fund growth and acquisitions
The company's prospectus to list on Shanghai's Nasdaq-style STAR Market was posted online by the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Friday, confirming details reported this week by Reuters after the application was filed on Wednesday. The Shanghai Stock Exchange filing showed Syngenta’s application to list on the STAR Market had been accepted and the company plans to issue up to 2.79 billion shares. Syngenta's IPO still requires the approval of the Shanghai Stock Exchange and registration with the China Securities Regulatory Commission. The float is expected to be bigger than video-sharing platform Kuaishou Technology's $6.2 billion Hong Kong IPO. Proceeds will fund acquisitions, including deals already announced to buy Yangnong Agrochemical and Valagro, the filing said.

Covid-19: Lembah Pantai residents under EMCO claim not allowed to leave for vaccination appointments
RESIDENTS in PPR Pantai Ria and Taman Bukit Angkasa in Kuala Lumpur, which were placed under an enhanced movement control order from July 1 to 14, claim they are not allowed to leave for Covid-19 vaccination appointments. "Some 324 Covid-19 cases were recorded in both localities following 697 screenings," the Defence Minister had said. Meanwhile, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said that residents under the enhanced MCO in Lembah Pantai would not be allowed out for their vaccination appointments. He added that those affected would have to reschedule their vaccination appointments through the MySejahtera app. Fahmi said four areas in Lembah Pantai have been placed under enhanced MCO, affecting 5,000 households and some 250,000 residents.

Australian officials report biggest daily Covid-19 caseload for 2021
MELBOURNE (July 3): Australia's New South Wales state recorded its biggest daily rise in COVID-19 infections this year, even as residents in several major cities across the country were released from snap lockdowns on Saturday. State Premier Gladys Berejiklian reported 35 new cases, 29 of which were linked to previous cases. That eclipsed the 31 cases reported a day earlier, taking total infections under the current outbreak to more than 250. "Health experts are giving myself and my colleagues advice on a daily basis," she said. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed that a lockdown in Brisbane would be lifted later on Saturday as she reported five new COVID-19 cases in the state.
