OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's lawmaker who served as the first indigenous justice minister until she clashed with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and sparked a high-profile ethics scandal said on Thursday that she was not planning on running for re-election. Ahead of the 2019 election, Canada's watchdog said Trudeau had violated ethics rules by trying to influence a corporate legal case. In the following election, Trudeau failed to win an outright majority, which forced him to get opposition support for legislation. To try to win a majority, Liberal sources say Trudeau is eyeing a September snap election. In the letter to her constituents explaining her decision not to run again, Wilson-Raybould did not mention Trudeau by name.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territories Ministry is looking to give RM100 in cash aid to some 4,000 hardcore poor families in the city for a period of three months starting July. SEREMBAN: Seventeen children were abused on average in a day in the first four months of this year, says Datuk Seri Rina Harun. “The victims in the bulk of the cases were abused by their own family members, including their parents and guardians. On the 13-year-old girl believed to have been a victim of abuse, Rina said appropriate action should be taken against those responsible. A police probe showed that six other children also lived with the victim at a condominium unit in Wangsa Maju. Rina said the non-governmental organisation which operated the home where the children lived had, prior to this, submitted an application to be registered.

A former Star editor’s dissertation on cybertrooping has won the 2021 Best Dissertation Award from the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR). This provides a point of reference for taking a new look at astroturf and political propaganda efforts in other venues. While the dissertation is certainly of interest to Internet researchers, it would be useful to scholars in social movements, political action and public policy." Dr Cheong left The Star in 2011 to pursue his postgraduate studies in Britain and went on to do his PhD at the University of Nottingham in 2015. While at The Star, he also wrote the column Bangsar Boy in the paper which ran for 11 years.

The middle class is the economic growth engine. The middle class also has the highest number of intellects, employed as managers and professionals who are part of significant organisations’ capacity building. It is clear that a thriving and optimistic middle class is necessary to provide a stable consumer-based demand. Beyond that, active engagement of the middle class in the economy has a trickle-up effect on the lower class through entrepreneurship and employment creation. Prioritising convenience and quality over price, the middle class is why branded retail outlets and high-end restaurants exist.

A friend from my hometown in Tumpat, Kelantan, was lost for words when he went to apply for a permit for inter-district travel to send food to his sister-in-law in a village in Kota Baru recently. The sister-in-law was desperately facing shortage of food supplies and had no means of obtaining food for her family’s survival. My friend, who faces walking difficulties himself, had sent his nephew to the nearest police station to seek a letter from the police for inter-district travel but was told he could not get the letter without a support letter. What support letter may I ask and from whom? It is a matter of life and death where we do not need unnecessary protocols to hinder the request.

But, are children these days really free or are they burdened by the expectations and impositions of the adults around them? Based on a 2020 finding, around 424, 000 children in Malaysia, from as young as 10 years old, suffer from mental health problems. Hence, it’s important to establish integrity and resilience, because wherever children go, these skills will help sustain themselves in any situation. An upsurge in the incidences of mental health issues among children and adolescents reminds us about the importance of parents in providing emotional security for their children. When children become adults, they will not be able to understand the importance of nurturing another without being nurtured themselves.

IS the idea of a digital dollar just a fad – like the 1980s craze with parachute pants that became synonymous with Michael Jackson and M.C. But speaking for himself, Quarles isn’t convinced that the Fed should have to issue its own electronic money to the public even if other central banks do so. My interpretation of what he’s suggesting is this: Instead of one, there could be many digital dollars. Federal Reserve Vice Chairman for Supervision Randal Quarles Quarles isn’t convinced that the Fed should have to issue its own electronic money to the public even if other central banks do so. And if central banks recognise one another’s digital IDs, cross-border remittances could become a lot cheaper with digital currencies issued by them.
