‘No fear’ for future of 2FM despite three high-profile exits in recent weeks, station boss says
Head of RTÉ 2FM Dan Healy has said there is “no fear” for the station despite Jennifer Zamparelli yesterday joining Doireann Garrihy and the 2 Johnnies in leaving the airwaves in recent weeks. “To go from people leaving the station to closing it down is nuts,” Mr Healy said told RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne. On the reaction of Director General Kevin Bakhurst to the departures and whether Mr Healy is being blamed for them, the 2FM head said “God no”. Speaking on RTÉ 2FM this morning, Zamparelli was asked if the exit spells the end between her and RTÉ. Zamparelli has presented her own show from 9am-12pm weekdays on RTÉ 2FM since May 2019, which she was “on leave” from in recent weeks.

Fix this narrative, Celtic
Celtic have not beaten either of the Rangerses in a Scottish Cup Final since before the Berlin Wall fell. We were poor that season yet managed to hold the line at Hampden in the sun. We have twice lost to Newco at Hampden in the Scottish Cup, both semis and both defeats, despite Celtic being strong favourites, just as we are tomorrow. Despite being champions, Celtic have an interesting edge to them going into the game. Fix this narrative, Celtic.

Fianna Fáil MEP candidate accuses party of favouritism at campaign launch
Gráinne Ní Aodha, PAFianna Fáil MEP candidate Niall Blaney accused his party of favouritism at the launch of its European election manifesto in Dublin on Friday. Fianna Fáil MEP candidate Niall Blaney was asked whether he felt supported by the party. Ms Chambers said there was a “healthy tension” between the Fianna Fáil candidates in the constituency. “So I come here today not as Niall Blaney, but as the people I represent and their voice and their frustration. But one thing for sure – I’m a strong republican Fianna Fáil advocate.”

What The NYC Portal To Dublin Is Like IRL
By May 14, less than a week after it debuted, the portal was temporarily shut down due to "inappropriate behavior." The portal was back up and running by May 19 with several changes in place. Most notably, the livestream was originally on 24/7, but since its reopening, it's now on from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local election race hots up
Local election race hots upThe local election race is hotting up in Offaly, as the list of candidates across the three local electoral areas has been completed. The Birr electoral area has the largest field, with 15 candidates contesting the election there for six seats. There are eleven candidates in the Tullamore area for seven seats and in Edenderry six seats will be chased by ten candidates. Nine of the overall 37 candidates are female, with four women seeking seats in Birr, three in Tullamore and two in Edenderry. Two other politicians elected at the 2019 contest are not before the local electorate on this occasion either.

Heather Humphreys could cut welfare support for 8,000 Ukrainian pensioners to as little as €38.80 a week
Photo: PAMore than 8,000 Ukrainian refugees living on pensions and disability welfare payments are at risk of having their supports slashed to below €40 a week. Thousands of elderly Ukrainian refugees relying on weekly state supports which Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys plans to cut to €38.80 in less than three months. Last week, with local and European elections approaching on June 7, Ms Humphreys announced plans to cut welfare for 27,000 Ukrainian refugees, who are in State-provided accommodation, within the next three months. The decision to cut payments came as the Government struggled to tackle the influx of people to Ireland seeking international protection as the elections approached. This will include more people working in the International Protection Office (IPO), the International Protection Appeals Tribunal, border management in Dublin Airport and Department of Justice.

Former nursing home to accommodate International Protection Applicants
Stella Maris, a former nursing home on the Roscommon Road in Baylough, Athlone, is set to accommodate International Protection Applicants in the near future, it has emerged. A Department of Integration spokesperson has confirmed to the Roscommon Herald that a new accommodation centre is coming on stream at the building which “will accommodate families seeking international protection”. The spokesperson said that the former nursing home has capacity for 60 people “and will be ready for new arrivals shortly”. Stella Maris operated as a nursing home for 35 years but closed in 2022 due to spiralling costs.

/ Vatican Media)By George WeigelAmong the many urgent questions raised by the Synods on the Family in 2014 and 2015 and the current Synod on Synodality — questions that will inevitably bear on the next papal conclave — is that of unity: in what, precisely, does the unity of the Church consist? What is the content of the “one” in the Creed’s affirmation of “one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church?”The Synods on the Family grappled with this in their debates on worthiness to receive Holy Communion: Could those in canonically irregular marriages, who were not living in unity with the settled teaching and pastoral practice of the Church, participate fully in the sacrament of unity, the Eucharist? The question of the content of the Church’s unity was clarified by Pope John Paul II during his first pastoral pilgrimage to the United States in October 1979. If that is true for ecumenism, it is certainly true for the unity of the Catholic Church. The content of the “one” in the Nicene affirmation of “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church” is a unity in faith: a unity in the truths we know from revelation and reason.

Somebody told me The Killers would be playing a pop-up show on Saturday in Boston. Alternative rock icons The Killers, who are headlining major music festival Boston Calling this weekend, will also be playing an impromptu gig at the Paradise Rock Club. This pop-up show is set to start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. How to get tickets for the Killers showTickets will be available for purchase at 10 a.m. today. After The Killers finish their Boston shows, they plan on going on their Rebel Diamonds tour, named after their greatest hits album, which released in December of last year.

What to expect in the General Election campaign on Friday
The Prime Minister is expected to visit a dockyard to talk about maritime transport before flying back to England for a final campaign event of his two-day tour of the UK. Appearing alongside Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, Sir Keir will argue that the General Election offers a chance to “finally turn the page on 14 years of Tory government and the failed SNP and to chart a new course for the country”. Obituary: Kathleen Ann Ireland
GEORGETOWN – Kathleen Ann Ireland, 74, of Groton, Mass., and Georgetown, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday April 5, 2024, surrounded by her husband, children, dogs and cats. Kathy was born Kathleen Ann Beniot in St Johnsbury, Vt., on Jan. 13, 1950, the daughter of the late Mae Brown Askham of Mont Vernon, N.H., and Lloyd Benoit Sr. of Ellsworth. In 1969 Kathy married Michael D. Kelly and gave birth to their daughter Kristin in 1970 and son Shawn in 1972. Kathy and Mike divorced in 1989 and she married Robert Ireland on Sept. 14, 2002. Kathy also loved contributing to her community via her involvement with the Working Women’s League of Georgetown.
