But then I started using an app that employed machine learning to convert recorded speech into text. [ Meta wants to use your Facebook and Instagram data to train AI. But this most recent leap in transcription software seemed to me to present a strong case for the technology’s potential. As a speech-to-text transcription tool, it does a modest and narrowly delineated thing extremely well. But as for “intelligence” – well, it’s very much still drinking piss and eating glue.

Elections in three of the world's largest emerging markets – India, South Africa and Mexico – have each, in their own way, produced unexpected results. Nonetheless, the Indian market premium, achieved as a result of government stability, is dissipating. In contrast to South Africa and India, the result in Mexico has, if anything, strengthened the hold of the ruling party. Last year Mexico overtook China as the biggest exporter to the US, selling $593 billion (£474 billion). In the long run, the triumph of moderation in India and South Africa should be a force for economic stability and expansion, and a net plus for inward investment.

Leinster down Ulster to set up URC semi-final against BullsPress AssociationLeinster brushed aside Ulster 43-20 at the Aviva Stadium to book a United Rugby Championship semi-final clash against the Bulls in Pretoria next weekend. Converted tries from Robbie Henshaw and James Lowe, as well as a Ross Byrne penalty, had Leinster leading 17-0 at half-time and well on course for a place in the last four. Leinster had no points to show for some early pressure, brought on by a maul steal from player-of-the-match Joe McCarthy. However, Van der Flier, set free by Osborne, slammed the door shut with 13 minutes remaining as another converted try saw Leinster move 36-15 ahead. Molony scrambled over from five metres out give victorious Leinster a sixth try, although a valiant Ulster had the last word through Lowry, darting over from Nathan Doak’s cross-field kick.

Tom Quirke in Abbeyknockmoy failed to make an impact, picking up less than three per cent of first preference votes in the tallies. Sinn Féin didn’t make any significant impact in this LEA, securing just over four per cent in the first preference tallies. Séamus Power was one of those who had a tough old time of it, only to show his grit on the way home.

Gareth Southgate laments England’s lack of character during Iceland defeatBy Phil Casey, PAEngland boss Gareth Southgate accused his players of failing to show enough character as they slumped to a 1-0 loss to Iceland at Wembley. The home side’s last match before Euro 2024 ended in boos at the final whistle after Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s goal was enough to give Iceland a shock win. “We learned a lot and we know the performance wasn’t good enough,” Southgate told Channel 4. “Equally we needed the game; there’s a lot of players that we’re managing their minutes and it was obviously a disjointed and disappointing performance and we didn’t show enough character. Southgate expects John Stones, on the ground, to recover from his ankle injury (Mike Egerton/PA) Photo by Mike Egerton“We’ll be ready,” he added.

The investment firm Baillie Gifford has had long associations with Edinburgh International Book Festival and the Hay book festival, but in the past fortnight both have terminated their sponsorship agreements. It remains to be seen what happens to the Cheltenham and Cambridge literary festivals. Also in the potential firing line is the prestigious Baillie Gifford Prize, awarded to the best nonfiction book of the year. Clearly a compelling case can be made that climate catastrophe is more important than a literary festival. A subject worth thrashing out at a literary festival near you, if it happens.
