'Our local safeguarding data tells us that we serve a deprived area, and we know that illegal money lending does go on in our area. I would bet money that some of our [students'] families have engaged with and are currently engaging with loan sharks.' The resources for the session were funded by England's Illegal Money Lending Team, a public body which aims to prevent loan sharking using money confiscated from illegal lenders. Hussey said: 'For the geography teacher to stand up and talk about loan sharks, or a history teacher to talk about drug misuse, it can be an abstract concept in a many cases. 'Years ago there was a loan shark in Sheffield lending to a 14-year-old, with their PlayStation as security against the loan,' she said.

REJUVENATED veteran politician Fergus McDonnell has rolled back the years and been crowned the comeback kid of Offaly County Council. Speaking at the count centre in Mucklagh this morning after his election on the first count, the Edenderry man briefly reflected on a career of representation which stretches back to the days of the Town Commissions in 1985. Offaly's only Independent Ireland councillor said: “I was a Fianna Fail member then and was there for 29 consecutive years up to 2004 up to the abolition, sadly, of Town Councils and in between that then I was elected to Offaly County Council, 2004-2009 as a PD (Progressive Democrat).”He added: “I'm now with Independent Ireland, it's a new party, a new dynamic, there's been a huge demand nationally, [when] people look at national debate they see that there's commonality between all the main parties, and even including opposition in that they're all singing off the one hymn sheet. “So I know and I believe that Independent Ireland will make a significant difference locally but more significantly, nationally.”

Northern Ireland thrashed by Spain despite taking early leadBy Ian Parker, PA, PalmaDaniel Ballard’s early goal had Northern Ireland dreaming of an upset, but it turned into a sobering night in Mallorca as Spain ran out 5-1 winners in their final Euro 2024 tune-up. Ballard headed Michael O’Neill’s team into a shock lead just 70 seconds in, but once Pedri had levelled from long range 10 minutes later, Spain piled on the punishment for a young Northern Ireland side. The Barcelona midfielder dropped into a pocket of space between the Northern Ireland lines and was too easily allowed to turn before beating Bailey Peacock-Farrell from 25 yards – the 21-year-old’s first international goal. It was the sort of chance Northern Ireland could not afford to squander and Spain were quickly to the other end, with Pedri getting his second in the 29th minute. Northern Ireland burst forward in first-half stoppage time, but after Charles’ shot was parried, Jamie Reid pulled the ball back only to watch Price sky it into the stands.

Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Independent candidates have filled the vast majority of the council seats declared so far. Fianna Fáil held six seats and emerged as the largest party, with Sinn Féin (four) and Independent candidates (five) gaining at the expense of Fine Gael (three). In a voice message to a Fine Gael WhatsApp group on Saturday, Taoiseach Simon Harris said he was “so encouraged” by the results he had seen. “That can only be a good thing,” the Fianna Fáil TD said at Cork City Hall.

As counting in the local elections goes on, the fate of the political parties and independents will become clear throughout the day. The party faces a tough battle over the weekend after government parties Fianna Fail and Fine Gael appeared on Saturday to have polled strongly. Tally indications on Saturday showed a predicted surge in the Sinn Fein vote has not materialised in the local elections while the Government coalition parties welcomed early results. “The idea that Fianna Fail would be coming in a distant third is completely disproven,” the Tanaiste said. This ‘internet panel’ polling having Fianna Fail at 14% and 15% – clearly Fianna Fail will be well ahead of that and will be over 20% by the time all of these counts are collated and put together.

Global investment trust Alliance is on a roll, much to the delight of shareholders. This is because along with rivals City of London, Bankers and Caledonia, Alliance has the longest record among the investment trust sector for consecutive years of dividend increases. It's one that has had 'dividend hero' status conferred on it by the Association of Investment Companies – which the trust doesn't want to lose. The result is ten fund managers, picked from across the globe, that run 11 slices of the trust's assets. The picks of these top-drawer fund managers produce a combined portfolio of 215 global stocks.

Cllr Mick Dollard at the count in Moate. Social media an 'absolute disaster and nightmare' for politicians, says poll topper DollardSocial media is an "absolute disaster and nightmare for politicians", that's the view of veteran councillor Mick Dollard, who is set to top the polls once again in Mullingar, nearly 40 years after he first entered public life. While many local and national politicians use social media to communicate with the public, he believes that negatives far outweigh the positives. Doing the work on the ground, and getting out and meeting people face to face is the most effective way for politicians to connect with voters, he says. "It [social media] is an absolute disaster and nightmare for politicians.
