Fledgling party Independent Ireland has made major gains in the local elections, with 20 new councillors so far elected. Cllr Seamus Walsh, a former Fianna Fáil councillor, became the first elected councillor for the party, increasing his vote by 500 in Outerard, Co Galway. Gerr Curley was elected for Independent Ireland in the Cobh LEA, while Cllr Danny Collins took a seat in Bantry. Ballinasloe councillor Declan Geraghty, who joined Independent Ireland in February, was also elected in Ballinasloe, Galway. In Connemara South, Independent Ireland candidate and returning councillor Noel Thomas topped the poll, getting one up on his former party.

According to economist David Higgins, a 3.5 per cent increase in population in a given year would be one of the highest ever recorded for a single country. According to the European Commission, the population of the State increased by 3.5 per cent last year – the largest increase on record. Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1’s “Morning Ireland” show on Monday morning, Mr Burns said "We do understand that €100 is a lot for an All-Ireland ticket. “It was a very big move for us to go to three figure but remember it’s the first time since 2018, it’s only the second time since 2011 (that the GAA has increased its final ticket prices). We have 350 coaches, we’re spending €7 million on those at the moment and that’s going to go up to €12m. That’s going up to €4.5m next year and the year after up to €5m.

Ordinary levelThe ordinary level maths paper, meanwhile, was “accessible” with no surprises, according to teachers. “All in all, a good resolution to their time with Leaving Cert ordinary level maths,” she said. Stephen Begley, head of maths at Dundalk Grammar School and Studyclix subject expert, agreed that paper two was “welcoming, fair and doable paper for students”.

Aldi to create 1,000 new jobs over five years as part of €400m investmentAldi is to create 1,000 new jobs over the next five years as part of a €400 million investment which will see the supermarket chain open 30 new stores around the country. The new locations will be across 13 counties, while the additional roles will be across its store network, warehouse operations and office facilities. The announcement comes as the retailer marks its 25th year in Ireland, sharing its latest economic impact report. The retailer said it spent €1.1 billion with Irish suppliers last year, with its overall economic contribution to the State totalling €757 million. The report noted Aldi's purchases from Irish suppliers have increased by 58 per cent since 2019, with Irish products now accounting for almost half of all sales.

Woman (60s) dies in single-vehicle crash in Co MeathA woman has died following a single-vehicle crash in Co Meath. The woman aged in her 60s was the driver and sole occupant of the car which crashed on Main Street in Ratoath at around 1am on Monday. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her remains have since been taken to the mortuary at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out. Main Street in Ratoath has been closed to traffic while a technical examination of the scene takes place, with local diversions in place.
