Dear Dáithí,Relations have broken down between my wife and my son, and I don’t quite know what to do about it. My wife feels he deliberately antagonises her with his lifestyle choices and deliberately embarrassed her in front of all her family. Live and let live has always been my motto, why can’t she be more understanding of our son? I think your son is really bothered by what going on with his life and he doesn’t realise what effect it’s having on you and especially your wife. The bottom line here is that your son is going to live his life and that is great, it really is.

BOOK: A Thousand Mornings Much to my poor secondary school English teacher’s chagrin, only in the past few years the penny has finally dropped... I’ve been deep diving into the world of Mary Oliver, and A Thousand Mornings is my latest companion. PODCAST: Song Exploder I’m big into Song Exploder and have been burning through Hrishikesh Hirway’s back catalogue. That kind of insight into the creative process is so inspiring – the realisation that all art starts from tiny, tender, often unsure shoots and has to be nurtured into greatness. FESTIVAL: Wild Fields I’m looking forward to the socially conscious Wild Fields festival in Norfolk in August.

The former Taoiseach was asked about the implications of the UK’s July poll for the island of Ireland during an appearance at an event in Belfast on Saturday. He said: “I think if it is a Labour government that could be helpful for Ireland. “They certainly will want a closer relationship with the European Union.”Mr Varadkar added: “I think they will be more even-handed when it comes to dealing with Northern Ireland. “Whereas the Conservative Party is the Conservative and Unionist Party, I think the Labour Party is probably a bit more even-handed.”Mr Varadkar also welcomed Labour pledges to repeal the controversial Act to deal with the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles. Weight distribution is all important, she says. “Pack light items first, place heavier items in the middle and then more lighter items at the top so it’s evenly distributed on your back and not too bulky. I pack at a height, keeping the overall width quite thin. That way my backpack fits on shelves in buses. I don’t have to put it underneath the bus, where there is a bigger risk of it being stolen.”

Strong and specific apologies from the IRA and the Irish state for its historical treatment of non-Catholics could help to "change hearts and minds" over unification, Leo Varadkar has said. The former Taoiseach said it had to be acknowledged that in its first decades of existence the Irish state was "sectarian in character". Mr Varadkar was then asked if, as part of a unity process, the IRA should apologise to victims or the Irish state for its past treatment of non-Catholics. He said: "I think we should certainly acknowledge that the first few decades of the Irish free state and the Irish state which followed was sectarian in character." "In terms of apologies I think apologies are appropriate but you have to be careful about them.

Jonathan McCambridge, PAStrong and specific apologies from the IRA and the State for its historical treatment of non-Catholics could help to “change hearts and minds” over unification, Leo Varadkar has said. He also said he believed the next Irish government should consider using its budget surplus to set up a fund to prepare for the economic challenges of Irish unity. He told the rally that while he did not hold any government position any more, he still wanted to advocate for unity. “In terms of apologies, I think apologies are appropriate, but you have to be careful about them. “I think if we are going to start to change minds and hearts among Protestant people, a much more stronger, specific apology for what was done and what we did, I think would help to change the hearts and minds.”
