Photo: Stock imageThere has been a sharp drop in the number of 18- to 30-year-olds living with their parents, down from a record high in the wake of the pandemic. Across the EU, just under half of adults under 30 live with their parents, and it is as low as 16pc in Finland. Until 2015, most young Irish adults lived independently. Mr McCartney said it was unlikely that emigration of young Irish adults was a major factor in the drop, given the overall net inflow of population last year. New figures from the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) show housing construction activity rose sharply in the first four months of this year.

Muireann DuffyCriminal law barristers are set to strike again as part of an ongoing dispute over the level of fees. Last October, criminal law practitioners staged action of this type for the first time, aiming to secure an "independent, meaningful, time-limited and binding mechanism" for fees paid to criminal barristers engaged by the Director of Public Prosecutions and under the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Scheme. It added that cuts made following the 2008 financial crisis continue to apply to payments for criminal law barristers, despite public pay agreements having restored remuneration levels across other sectors. Yet, barristers continue to be treated differently to others in the criminal justice system and indeed to society at large." Ms Phelan said they regret having to take this action, and will work with colleagues in the criminal justice system to minimise the impact on the most vulnerable people.

Billie Eilish has sparked controversy by appearing to disparage artists who play long concerts — but does she have a point? I said to him, ‘I blame you, man; we used to play an hour, an hour and a half. For me, however, 2.5 hours (plus encore) is where I tap out, whether it’s a stadium gig or an intimate club show. Thoughts of babysitters, last trains and the availability of taxis begin to creep in, the longer a monotonous gig rolls on. A good gig shouldn’t be a sprint, but nor should it be a gruelling marathon to endure.

Selecting Ireland’s 50 best songs was no easy task, but this list chosen by the country’s top music experts showcases our songcraft at its finest. Many readers had the same response: do the same for Irish songs. No songs from overseas artists of Irish extraction. Sorry Morrissey, Paul McCartney, Kate Bush… Songs from international bands featuring an Irish musician were permitted. Built around manager Jack Charlton’s oft-quoted mantra, the song is a rousing, feelgood belter that features some of Irish music’s biggest names.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee has been urged to enact long-mooted hate crime legislation "without further delay" following the alleged attack of three gay men in Phoenix Park on Monday. CEO of Outhouse Oisín O’Reilly said Ms McEntee must "stop delaying" the enactment of the hate crime and hate speech bill that was promised before Christmas following the Dublin riots in November last year. “It really underscores the need for the hate crime legislation to be enacted without further delay. According to An Garda Síochána’s 2023 Hate Crime Data and Related Discrimination Motives report, there has been a 12% increase in the number of hate crime and hate-related incidents reported to gardaí in 2023 compared to 2022. Mr O’Reilly said the underreporting of hate crime in Ireland is prominent but the increase in reporting is welcome.
