Photo by Sam Barnes/SportsfileHard to Hyde the disappointmentI hadn’t attended a senior football championship match in Hyde Park in 23 years until last Sunday, and Mayo played that day as well – and didn’t even get a draw! Don’t forget I grew up in an era when our Leinster SFC game was referred to as ‘the annual outing’! Exactly 36 years ago, I was part of a gang of seven who spent eight unforgettable days in West Germany for Euro 88. It is entirely understandable why Westmeath Gaels are nervous as to what the next few years will bring on the senior football front. Throw in Kerry, whose win in TEG Cusack Park all but scuppered Fortune’s side on day one of the Joe McDonagh Cup.

Every time I come to Norway, I’m fascinated by their experiment in big government, and how little people are bothered by high taxes. (Cameron Hewitt / Rick Steves’ Europe)By Rick Steves / Rick Steves’ EuropeOn my last visit to Oslo, I was struck by how peaceful the city felt. Every time I come to Norway, I’m fascinated by their experiment in big government. Nowadays, Norwegian restaurants and bars are routinely equipped with blankets so those who still smoke can do so outside — even in the cold season. Edmonds resident Rick Steves (www.ricksteves.com) writes European guidebooks, hosts travel shows on public TV and radio, and organizes European tours.

Promising review: "My pool is so old school and boring that I bought these to liven it up, and what a difference!! My pool went from 'meh' to WOW! Once inflated, a few hours in the sun is sufficient, and they are charged and ready to go. There is no manual way to power them on or off; they glow all night long. I really liked how easy these were to fill and charge, and I like the solar power and the amazing color display.

School's out, and unless you've booked them into summer camp, the kids are home for the next few months. Here's where the law in Massachusetts stands on leaving your kids home unsupervised. Is there a minimum age for leaving your kids at home? This definition is not dependent upon location (i.e., neglect can occur while the child is in an out-of-home or in-home setting.) “School behavior can also be a good indicator because school is where children spend the most of their time without their parents watching.

One of Take That’s support acts for their Friday night Malahide Castle gig, St Lundi, said the band usually brings the sunshine with them. But they were right, the rain dried up, with the sun shining just in time for golden hour and most importantly, showtime. The setlist touched on all of the hits, from the Million Love Songs that started it all, to the completely heady These Days and Never Forget. After all these years, the trio have learned not to take themselves too seriously, even if they are seriously talented. The band was electric, the crowd was joyous, and most importantly, The Flood, indeed, couldn’t stop us dancing again.

Ireland is among countries most likely to appeal to international housing investors because of sizeable demand and requirement for residential accommodation for students, senior citizens and the growing population, according to a new report. However, it may be the end of the year before big funds return to the rental market here. But the report says this strengthens the case for investing in living assets, especially as interest rates ease. It also expects the numbers of senior Irish citizens to grow by 50pc over the next 16 years, which would also be the fastest rate in Europe. “From a real estate perspective, this greying of Europe points to a likely significant increase in demand for purpose-built healthcare and senior living accommodation,” it adds.

Many readers had the same response: do the same for Irish songs. As fellow Northern Irish band That Petrol Emotion might say, this one will detonate your dreams. The Irish band we had all been waiting for delivered this shot across the bows on their celebrated debut album Dogrel all of five years ago. It’s a sound collage typical of Loveless, voted best Irish album ever in this newspaper last year. The song achieved anthemic mortality when it featured on the band’s incendiary live album U2: Under a Blood Red Sky.

The High Court ruling represents a blow to Philip Nolan's prospects of returning to Science Foundation Ireland. Photograph: Tom HonanWith perhaps no little understatement, High Court judge Rory Mulcahy described recent times at Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), where Philip Nolan served as director general, as being “marked by turbulence”. Harris had also earmarked Nolan as “CEO designate” of a new body, Research Ireland – which will involve the merger of SFI and the Irish Research Council (IRC) – with a €300 million annual budget. “But on the state of the evidence to date, he has not succeeded in establishing a strong case.”[ Prof Philip Nolan refused significant extension of orders preventing dismissal from SFI ][ Philip Nolan v Science Foundation Ireland: The dispute that has rocked Ireland’s science community ]But where does this now leave Nolan? He suggested Nolan would not necessarily lose out on becoming head of the new Research Ireland organisation which was a matter for the new Minister for Higher Education, Patrick O’Donovan.

Former attorney general Paul Gallagher is one of the top commercial lawyers representing the biggest names in aircraft leasing. The dispute running in the parallel world of the commercial court is a high-stakes one involving some of the world’s biggest aviation lessors and insurers. Sources say the legal fees being paid to lawyers in the UK litigation are at least twice what their Irish counterparts are getting. Running such high-profile commercial litigation in the Irish courts is seen as a huge boost for Ireland for Law , the Government-supported initiative established with a mission to attract international commercial litigation to Irish courts. It is estimated up to 500 lawyers, for reasons including its potential implications for other cases, are viewing the litigation on a regular basis.

The Department of Public Health, HSE West and North West, is encouraging the public to be aware of an increase of COVID-19 infections in the community. Ongoing awareness of symptoms of COVID-19 and taking steps to prevent the spread in both the community and in healthcare settings remain important to protect those most vulnerable. This new variant in the community has resulted in an increase in outbreaks in nursing homes, hospitals and other healthcare settings putting vulnerable patients at risk of infection. If you choose to do one, there is different advice to follow if you have a positive COVID-19 test. Dr Áine McNamara, Area Director of Public Health, Department of Public Health HSE West and North West, said: “We are reminding everyone of the importance of taking steps to prevent the spread of serious illness from COVID-19, particularly for those most vulnerable in our community.
