He will hold official talks with a number of officials on climate change ahead of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), which will be held in Egypt's REd Sea reort city of Sharm el–Sheikh this November, the embassy said in a press release. He will meet with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly as well as Ministers Sameh Shoukry of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Shaker of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Yasmine Fouad of Environment, Tarek El-Molla of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Hala El Saeed of Planning and Economic Development. Timmermans will also hold talks on a Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Partnership and means of strengthening engagement on topics of mutual interest, such as transition to clean energy and energy efficiency, green growth models and diversification, sustainable finance, carbon markets, adaptation, the press release added.

CAIRO - 9 April 2022: The Ministry of Health and Population on Friday announced that a hearing survey has been conducted for 2,854,764 newborns, as part of a presidential initiative for early detection and treatment of hearing loss and impairment for newborns, which was launched in September 2019. Some 167,970 children would be re-examined, a week after the first screening at the same unit, Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said. Around 16,758 children were referred after the second test to 30 hospitals and referral centers nationwide for higher evaluation and the start of medical treatment or the installation of a hearing aid or the transfer of the child for cochlear implant in accordance to his/her condition, the spokesman added. The number of examination centers were increased to cover 3,500 health units across all governorates to conduct audiological examinations for children from the day of birth to the age of 25 days, he added.

(CNN)Yemen‘s President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has been replaced by a newly formed presidential council in a bid to support UN efforts to end the country’s seven-year civil war. The newly formed eight-member council replaces Hadi, who has been President for a decade since the ousting of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012, as well as Vice President Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar. The Houthis have yet to comment on the new presidential council. Saudi’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with al-Alimi following the announcement, Saudi state television showed. Tarek Saleh, a military commander and nephew of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, will sit on the council.

CAIRO – 8 April 2022: Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Egypt’s top Islamic authority, Al-Azhar, extended condolences to Pope Tawadros II, the Pope of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, and the Coptic people after a priest was killed in Alexandria. Archipriest Arsanious Wadeed, the priest of Church of Virgin Mary and Saint Paul in Alexandria was killed late Thursday after a man attacked him with a cold weapon on the street. “Al-Azhar sheikh stresses that killing a soul is a major sin that brings God’s wrath and punishment in the hereafter. God has made killing one person the same as killing all people,” Al-Azhar said in a statement. Pope Tawadros mourned the priest of Alexandria, saying: “We bid farewell to a virtuous priest and an active servant.”

A funeral procession was held on Thursday for Olha Sukhenko, a Ukrainian village mayor who was found murdered after Russian forces left the Kyiv region. Sukhenko was mayor of Motyzhyn, to the east of the capital, when she was killed in the custody of Russian forces, according to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk. Vadym Tokar, the head of the Makariv village council, posted video on Telegram of local residents marching behind a van carrying the coffins of Sukhenko and her husband and son, who were also killed, according to Tokar. “In Motyzhyn, they said goodbye toTokar. “In Motyzhyn, they said goodbye to Olha Sukhenko, her husband and son, who were tortured and killed by the Russian occupiers,” Tokar said, adding that about 300 people came to pay their respects by following the coffins and kneeling on the road.

CAIRO – 8 April 2022: Egypt's Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said Egypt has managed to overcome the fallout of the current international economic crisis linked to the war in Ukraine. The minister underlined his confidence in the strength of the Egyptian economy and its flexibility in dealing with consecutive international challenges since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. He said the Egyptian economy is growing in view of the national projects being accomplished, noting that $400 billion were spent over the past seven years for developing the infrastructure. He said Egypt seeks to boost its exports to $100 billion, referring to the progress realized in upgrading the tax mechanism. In a statement, the Cabinet said the program, which comes in light of the Russia-Ukraine crisis’s impact on global economy, may include additional funding for Egypt.

Australia is preparing to deliver more lethal aid to Ukraine following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to the nation’s parliament last week, its foreign ministry announced Thursday. “Australia has delivered five C-17 loads of military support — lethal and non-lethal — to Ukraine. In February, the Australian government committed to providing lethal and non-lethal military equipment, medical supplies, and financial assistance to support Ukraine, as well as contributing $3 million in US dollars to NATO’s Trust Fund. Since then, shipments of lethal aid — including missiles, ammunition, and armored vehicles — have made their way into the country. Australia has provided close to $70 million in US dollars in lethal aid to Ukraine since the war began.

The General Court of the EU on Wednesday canceled a decision freezing the funds of late President Hosni Mubarak and his family. The court did not disclose on its website the amount of funds that will be removed from the freeze. The funds will be available to the Mubarak family after the expiry of the 70-day period for appealing the court’s decision. In 2021 the EU announced the abolition of sanctions imposed in 2011 on nine Egyptians: including the family of former President Hosni Mubarak, on suspicion of embezzling state funds. Mubarak served as the fourth president of Egypt for thirty years.

(CNN) – An additional 42 genes connected to the development of Alzheimer’s disease have been uncovered in the largest study of genetic risk for Alzheimer’s to date. “The new risk variants identified in the present study are significantly associated with progression” to Alzheimer’s disease, says the study, published Monday in the journal Nature Genetics. The discovery will provide scientists with potential new targets for treatments, medications and lifestyle changes that might reduce the risk of the deadly brain disease, experts say. “This paper gives us so many more tools in our toolbox to, eventually, more precisely target Alzheimer’s disease,” said Isaacson, who was not involved in the study. CAIRO - 5 April 2022: Agriculture Minister el Sayyed el Quseir said on Monday that Egypt exported 11 shipments of honey bees to Saudi Arabia (about 10,456 parcels) after a ban imposed on exporting honey bees to Saudi Arabia was lifted. He praised efforts made by the General Organization for Veterinary Services to meet the demands of the Saudi side to resume exports of honey bees to the Gulf country. Egypt achieved self-sufficiency of honey bees five years ago, the minister noted. The ban on importing Egyptian bees in Saudi Arabia has been lifted after a meeting between the directors of the Plant Quarantine in the two countries. Egypt also invited a Saudi technical committee to the country to select and uphold apiaries that apply to export bees to Saudi Arabia.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered that the Nasser Institute Hospital be converted into a scientific research center and an integrated medical city. The president called for comprehensive development of the Nasser Institute to raise its capacity, increase the efficiency of its infrastructure and ensure its medical services are sustainable, Rady said. Abdel Ghaffar presented the development plan of the Nasser Institute which involved adding new buildings for internal and pediatric diseases, outpatient clinics, a genetic disease research center and laboratory, as well as an airstrip and river ambulance service and the expansion of the oncology building. The president also instructed the establishment of a permanent headquarters in the new administrative capital of the Imperial College London. Rady explained this would contribute to the academic link between mathematics and emerging technologies, and the development of the software industry and cybersecurity in Egypt.
