Morocco and the UAE have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on investment cooperation on the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline, set to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Europe through West and North Africa. Under the agreement, which was signed during a state visit to Abu Dhabi by King Mohammed VI of Morocco last week, the UAE will provide financial and technical contributions to the project, which is poised to promote economic integration and energy security in West Africa. Providing a vital pathway for West African gas to international markets, the 5,600-km pipeline will span more than 13 countries along Africa’s Atlantic coast, connecting Nigeria’s gas to Europe through The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco. With strong political backing from Nigeria and other member-countries of the Economic Community of West African States, construction work on the pipeline is scheduled to begin in 2024, with feasibility studies for the pipeline currently underway. The agreement forms part of a series of MoUs signed between Morocco and the UAE, signaling the Gulf Arab state’s commitment to supporting socioeconomic integration and development in West and North Africa.

The Global Burden of Disease special report provides an update of health estimates for the global, regional and national burden and trends of cardiovascular disease from 1990‒2022 by analysing the impact of cardiovascular conditions and risk factors across 21 global regions. While cardiovascular disease rates are high globally, regions of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East were estimated to have the highest burden of cardiovascular disease mortality, the study’s authors report. Key data from the study include that ischaemic heart disease remains the leading global cause of cardiovascular disease mortality, with an age-standardised rate per 100,000 of 108.8 deaths, followed by intracerebral haemorrhage and ischaemic stroke. Eastern Europe had the highest age-standardised total cardiovascular disease mortality at 553 deaths per 100,000, but contrastingly, countries in Australasia had the lowest age-standardised total cardiovascular disease mortality at 122.5 deaths per 100,000 people. The regions with the highest rates of cardiovascular disease burden attributable to dietary risk were Central Asia, Oceania, and parts of North Africa and the Middle East.

The lake is connected to the Bay of Bengal by the Uppukalli Creek and the Yedayanthittu estuary and is visited for nesting by migratory birds on the Central Asian flyway. Kazhuveli is home to over 200 species of birds and is recognised as an important stopover and breeding ground for about 40,000 migratory birds. A pre-migratory season synchronised census of wetland birds has been scheduled on December 27 and 28, he said. Migratory birds, especially water birds utilize wetlands like Kazhuveli located between their breeding grounds and wintering sites as stop over sites during their northward and southward journeys.
