Nigerian startup Primed E-Health says it is having tangible impact in terms of healthcare outcomes from its automation of hospitals via a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution. Primed also improves the overall patient experience by providing a mobile app to book appointments and make payments to hospitals or doctors in their network. With over 45 hospitals currently signed up to the platform, Primed E-Health has successfully trained and onboarded over 10,000 doctors, and directly impacted the lives of over two million patients. He said Primed E-Health’s platform has already had a tangible impact on healthcare outcomes. Primed E-health bootstrapped until its first investment, from The Baobab Network, in 2022, and recently secured US$18,000 in funding after being selected to take part in the latest ASIP accelerator programme run by Startupbootcamp AfriTech.

Whether the agenda will make a substantial difference to African research and the working lives of its scientists is another matter. ARISE, the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence, was set up in 2020 with funding of €25 million (US$27.20 million) from the EU. “I have seen what I would call the real impact of the EU–AU partnership on African scientists,” he says. Although many EU–AU initiatives have been beneficial, governance and coordination of resources across the African continent can be a challenge. Tunisian villager Ounissa Mazhoud ties two empty jerry cans to a donkey and cautiously descends a stony hill towards the last local source of water. The North African country, in its fourth year of drought, is grappling with its worst water scarcity in years. “We are the living dead … forgotten by everyone,” said Mazhoud, 57, whose region was once one of Tunisia’s most fertile, known for its wheat fields and Aleppo pines. For many Irish people, the riots that engulfed the streets of downtown Dublin last month were an uncomfortable reminder of the past. Not since the darkest days of “the Troubles,” as the conflict between republican Catholics and unionist Protestants in Northern Ireland was known, have such scenes of violence on the island of Ireland made frontpage headlines around the world. Rumors disseminated on social media falsely claimed the assailant was an immigrant, prompting far-right protesters to descend on the scene and breach the police cordon. Bolstered by an opportunist hooligan element and a lack of police preparedness, the situation quickly got out of control. Although the scale of the unrest took both the authorities and the general public by surprise, it probably shouldn’t have.

To establish why it was crucial to see and hear Africa’s women and youth in action at COP28, it’s imperative to establish the stark reality driving their presence. Africa grapples with a perilous triple threat: the relentless impact of climate change, heightened vulnerability, and a distressing lack of preparedness — an uncomfortable truth we must confront. In 2023 alone, devastating floods wreaked havoc in the Libyan port city of Derna, an earthquake struck Morocco, wildfires swept across Algeria, and Cyclone Freddy triggered landslides in Malawi – the epicenter of the disaster – killing thousands. Simultaneously, severe floods caused chaos in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. Because countries like Somalia, contributing only 0.03% of total global emissions, are disproportionately affected by climate change.

The scimitar-horned oryx was declared extinct in the wild in 2000. Herds of the hoofed creatures, known as scimitar-horned oryx, could be found as far west as Mauritania and as far east as Egypt. After a hunting binge in the 1980s, however, their population plummeted, and in 2000, they were officially declared extinct in the wild. As a result of the global effort, 510 scimitar-horned oryx have been born in the wild of Chad, a landlocked country in central North Africa. Of the 95 species identified in the study, the scimitar-horned oryx is the first to be successfully returned to the wild.
